Hunting camp coffee has a reputation it earned: burnt, bitter, and somehow still weak. None of that is required. Camp brewing is forgiving if you get four things right, and none of them need equipment you do not already own.
1. The ratio does the work
1 to 16, coffee to water. In field terms, about two tablespoons of ground coffee per six ounces of water. A standard 8-cup percolator wants roughly a cup and a quarter of grounds. Measure once at home, mark the scoop, and camp brewing stops being a guess.
2. Water just off the boil
A rolling boil scorches coffee. Pull the kettle when it boils, count ten seconds, then pour. That puts you near 200 degrees, where extraction is clean. If you are percolating, keep the flame low once it starts perking and give it five to seven minutes, no more.
3. Grind the night before
Whole bean keeps better, but nobody wants a grinder running at 4 a.m. Grind what tomorrow needs before you turn in, seal it, and pack the kettle at the same time. Pour when the decoys are out.
4. Bring the right amount, not the whole shelf
Bags stay at peak for three to four weeks after roast, so buy for the month, not the season. For a camp of four drinking two cups each morning, a 12 oz bag covers about three days; a 2 lb bag covers a week and a half. Every order here ships within days of roast, so the math starts from fresh. We don't warehouse beans.
What to brew
